Playback Theatre has existed for over forty years across the world, and we’re bringing it to Nashville!

What is Playback Theatre?

Jo Salas, one of Playback’s founders, describes it as “an original form of theatrical improvisation in which people tell real events from their lives, then watch them enacted on the spot.”  Telling and enacting stories is as old as humanity itself.  Playback Theatre is a profound and dynamic way to connect us to each other and to that ancient part of ourselves.

Playback Theatre consists of a conductor who reaches out to audience members for stories to share.  The actors and musician then listen deeply, after which they reflect the experience back through improvisation to the audience. Sometimes, audience members will join performers on stage as citizen actors.  Performing experience is not necessary for impactful story-telling.

Who is Playback Theatre for?

Playback Theatre’s versatility allows it to be performed almost anywhere: for the general public, specific communities or in tandem with other practices.  For example, there are literally dozens of companies in Israel alone, many of them working with Israel and Palestine relationships.  Playback Memphis brings together African-American communities with the local police force.  They also have a powerful anti-bullying campaign within their playback work.

Why Playback?

There are so many reasons to do Playback Theatre:

It’s its own unique art form.

It has the power to heal communities and affect change.

And it’s also just really fun!
